External chain tighteners

When do you need to apply external chain tighteners?

It is hard to define. The internal chain tightener pads can keep the chains tighten under a certain load on the chains. In case the load is higher, the chains will get losen too frequently.

What circumstances make it a good decision to apply the external chain tigheteners?

  • Rider weight above 75-80 kg
  • Rough, bumpy surface
  • Hilly roads
  • Strong strike out startings

Can the external chain tighteners be mounted later on?

Yes. It can be mounted on later as well. Here is a little tutorial on how to apply them:

  • Take off one of the main bolts (you can do it one after the other, no need to take off both bolts at once).

  • Insert the 6mm screws into the holes on the alloy part and fit the ringbolt on the axle. WARNING: the ring is not closed, there is a little gap on it. The gap should be on the left side (the hook should turn clockwise).

  • Tighten the screws and put on the main bolt but do not tighten it yet.
  • After installing both tighteners, tighten the chains by tightening the bolt on top. Tighten it a little less than you’d think it would be enough; when you tighten the main bolts, it will give it a very little extra tightness.  You don’t need to tighten the main bolts as much as before; just tighten it “normally”, not to loose them.
